Tea Plants (Camellia sinensis)

Tea might be the Nation's favourite drink, but the cultivation of tea is normally associated with more tropical countries.  Tea plants are however well suited to our climate and can be grown very successfully right here in our own gardens.

Tea plants are part of the Theaceae family that includes all camellia bushes.  Camellias are very popular ornamental shrubs, chosen for their glossy, evergreen leaves and pretty flowers that are a  welcome sight in  late winter and spring.  Camellia sinensis however, is far more than just an ornamental plant.   The fresh leaves can be used to make 'green' tea and the dried leaves make the more commonly consumed 'black' tea.

Tea plants are hardy to around -6 degrees C.  They prefer a location in sun or partial shade and enjoy moist, acid soil.  Don't worry if you live in a very, cold area or have an alkaline soil, as tea plants grow well in a container.

Find Tea Plants for £9.99 in a 1 litre pot in our Plant Shop.
